  8. Minutes of the Whois and Network Information Lookup Service Working
  9. Group (WNILS)

  11. Introduction and Overview

  13. Joan Gargano spoke briefly about the impetus for starting the working
  14. group and development of the Whois++ application.  This was followed by
  15. presentations by the developers.

  17. Architecture of Whois++
  18.  
  19. Peter Deutsch presented an overview of the Whois++ architecture.  Peter
  20. described the prototype system, the currently supported query syntax and
  21. areas for improvement.

  23. Centroids
  24.  
  25. Chris Weider provided an overview of the mechanism used to build a
  26. distributed directory service called ``centroids''.  Simon Spero
  27. continued with a discussion of the underlying theory of centroids which
  28. has been used by other groups studying information retrieval issues.

  30. Sample Server

  32. Jim Fullton presented a brief overview of the Whois++ server developed
  33. at CNIDR. Jim describe his system which was built using standard Unix
  34. utilities.  Response times of 15 seconds to query a database of 30,000
  35. records was reported, however Jim felt significant improvements could be
  36. achieved with software designed and coded to optimize the system.
  37. Servers for testing are available at CNIDR and UC Davis.  It is
  38. anticipated about 10 new servers will be in place within a couple of
  39. weeks.

  43. The floor was opened for questions and general discussion of the
  44. protocol.

  48. The Whois++ developers solicited input about desired features.  The
  49. following work was recommended.

  52.    o A feature to allow servers to pass information about servers that
  53.      poll them to optimize searching.

  61.    o A description of printer output format.
  62.    o There needs to be a clearinghouse for templates.  It was
  63.      recommended this be performed by CNIDR.
  64.    o Privacy and security features.

  66.    o Further discussion about usernames and attributes.
  67.    o A method for using synonyms with queries.
  68.    o A method to abort searches and continue searches.
  69.    o Provide the ability to store and pass images.
  70.    o A way to limit the attributes returned by a search.
  71.    o A method for tagging attributes.
